Installing blog archive

I have installed C5 without the blog components but need to have the blog arhive in the sidebar of the homepage. How is this achieved? In a previous thread, someone suggested copying it from concrete/blocks/date_archive to blocks/date_archive then installing it. How exactly is this done?
