Intense debates won't install

The following errors occurred when attempting to process your request: There was an error unpacking your file. Perhaps you have not uploaded a valid zip file, or you do not have zip installed.
Can anyone tell me what to do? there is no help I can find anywhere else and the installation of this add-on should be simple as pie. Here is what I am doing:
I download the zip file from the official concrete.org source. I upload it (as a zip file) into my root directory for Concrete5 then I go back to the add-on page (where it appears as something that is ready to download) and when I click the download button it displays the message.
Any solutions out there? Would really love to have the full fuctionality of a universal chat app on the site! :)

oh yeah and of course I have tried unpacking it into the root directory (which seems to work fine, the files are all on there) but still there is no add-on i can see

Upload and unpack the package on your web server. Place the unpacked files in the packages directory of the root of your concrete5 installation.
Go to the the Add Functionality page in your concrete5 Dashboard.
Click the Install button next to the package name.
(only trouble is no new box appears after I uploaded and unpacked a zip onto the web server) help! this is rather more alarming than i realised!

Then you shouldn't see anything about downloading but instead an option to install under "Awaiting Installation".
