Invalid email address when trying to change password

Not sure why the controller is even checking the email address in the change password section of member profiles, but this prevents users from changing passwords. I copied the concrete/controllers/profile folder to root/controllers/ and commented out lines 41 thru 47 as found in another thread (which seems to work) but I'm wondering what effects this may have in other areas of my site?
