loading page type specific javascript and style sheets

I'm trying to build a rather complicated site. I was wondering if there was a way call specific style sheets and JavaScript to page types, rather than having the included in every page.

I ask as the header is the same for every page and as in the default template is taken from the elements folder along with the footer.
