Login validate via imap or pop3

Im going to start working on a project that requires users to validate via an imap or pop3 server, i was wondering if anybody had any pointers as to where to start on concrete's code, any help is appreciated.
Greetings. I see this was posted 4 years ago, but I wanted to see if you ever wrote this application, because I need something to do this and before re-inventing the wheel I thought it would be good to see if it was already done and open-sourced. Thanks.
