Lots of pages and publishing

Hi - Ive got a page which contains c500 child pages (at various levels)

When I publish the page it takes about 30 seconds to complete... I've tracked this back and it looks like its something to do with the rescanning of paths for all child pages etc

Has anyone else come across this behaviour before?!
