Maintenance Mode

When I put a a new site in to Maintenance mode using 5.6.1 I am unable to access any pages when logged in as super user.
If I try and access them via the sitemap the pages still appear in Maintenance mode.
Dashboard pages are all fine.
Am I missing something here or could this be a bug?

This is how the system works. When in Maintenance mode even if you are logged in, you will still see pages as being in maintenance mode.
I use the Maintenance Editor add-on by mkly when editing a live site.

Thanks for that.
I just assumed that Maintenance mode actually let you do some maintenance.
I have never really used it before so it's my thing 'learned for today'.
Odd that this addon is not in the core, seems like a good place for it.

I totally agree, I assume it is to promote more add-on development.
