Making a site go live

Hi, Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
What do I have to do to make my working in progress site my main site? I am currently building the new site under an extended url but when it is complete I want it to replace my original site that has been active for several years.
Hopefully I have explained my needs in details and that someone can assist.
