Making AutoNav horizontal

OK.
So I have a Homepage and a bunch of other pages but the AutoNav just shows a vertical, bulleted list.
How can I turn it into a horizontal menu with tab graphic as a background for each button?
I have made and uploaded a custom template but it is not being applied for some reason...

The best way is to do this in css and then you can create a new auto nav template and just change the class...
Maybe check outhttp://css-tricks.com for some tips.
