MariaDB or MySQL

Is there any clarity yet, which direction Concrete5 is taking? As I understand it, the newest versions of MySQL and MariaDB are quite different. Gone are the times of being compatible.

Can I safely upgrade to the newest MariaDB or MySQL version with the current version of C5? And would it be safe or problematic if I later have to switch?

I get the feeling I just stay on a lower version for the moment to see what's happening, but any input is welcome.

Gone are the times of being compatible? Not that I know. While they have the same origin, they have changed over time but this is mostly just how they implemented different requirements. Occasionally, a new standard SQL functionality might be added to one but the other will likely soon after add and I doubt C5 will implement such a feature as it might break compatibility with many current installations. For instance, MariaDB implemented recursive queries, MySQL later did the same, and a quick scan of the C5 source code doesn't seem to use.
