Is it possible to assign permissions to member attributes?

I basically have a website with different tiers of members and I only want certain attributes to appear on certain member profiles.

So for example, I don't want a normal bog standard member being able to select that they are a a president of the committee.

Can this be done via attributes or should I be making member groups and assigning the attribute permissions to that group?
