I want a members area similar to COncrete5.org.
with a list of all members and the ability to private message and see messages, filters etc etc.
How can I create something like this?

I thought that the members single page displays a members attributes on the fly, when they clicked their logged in name in the footer for instance.
In a website with many members however, and you want visible public profiles on a scrolling page (like concrete) would you assign a dedicated single profile page to each member and then link to that dedicated page from a standard theme page. So you could click on the member name and go to their profile page.
THINKING AHEAD:– I guess you can only look at one profile page at a time so its still being built on the fly, is that right?
I'm not quite sure of the work flow on this. For a start where do you get the links for everybodys Profile page all underneath each other. I looked at the profile page and I'm not sure you can link to it in the normal way...
