multilingual 404 pages

Hi all
I am having issues customizing the 404 page for multilingual site branches: I have customized the "page-not-found" for each language (including a matching results page), but for some reason it doesn't change properly to the desired language (i.e. a French 404 should lead to french search results, a German to German ...)
What am I doing wrong?
