Newbie alert - building my first c5 site - editing theme after site is live

I'm just starting the design process in Photoshop and will be creating a site from scratch (not reworking an existing theme)...fingers crossed! I'm thinking of limiting to just a few the areas that will be editable by the client in c5 to make it easier for him and also harder for him to mess up. My question is, if he needs something changed in one of the non-editable areas, what is the process for editing the "theme"? Do I just edit the .php/css files and save over the old ones? And will that be reflected in the site or do I need to do something special (besides refresh my browser)?

Thanks!

Your theme uses "templates" to create the pages,
any change you make to the theme template will reflect on all pages used by the theme template,
If your client wants to have different content on different pages then you need to use editable areas..
If your client wants the content to be shown on all pages then yes you can hard code using php, html and css..
