Non-standard downloadables

My client wants to have CAD files (.dxf) as downloadable for their clients. However, being a non-standard suffix, I can't simply upload them and add a download link.

Any ideas please?

If you login to the Dashboard -> System & Settings there is an "Allowed File Types" list, if you add this file type to that list you should be able to do just what you described. You probably need to clear the cache after updating the list.
