Optimizing Images

What is best practice with regard to optimizing images before upload? If I understand correctly different thumb nails are generated on upload. Is it the case that the optimal size is selected before display? It seems that the selection is device based but does the selection process also take account of the area size where the image is to be displayed? For example I am using the Framework theme which has a wide and narrow banner area. Will I get any benefit by by cropping the banner images or am I just wasting my time doing so?

As a general "rule of thumb(nail)", I usually do this:

- Use JPEG or PNG format
- Keep images 300kb or less
- Images are 100 DPI or less
- Images are never more than 1200 px wide

Concrete does auto-generate thumbnails for each image. Also, Concrete has a built-in image editing tool that allows you to re-adjust the original image size and even crop it! So, even if you upload larger images, you can always edit them just via Concrete file manager (select the "edit" option to launch the editor).

Also, if you're using the core Image block, all images are automatically responsive, so they will fit no matter what device you view them on.

Thank you very much PineCreativeLabs. I had seen something about the auto thumbnails in video early on and had mostly forgotten about it until today. If I understand correctly, I should just stay within your guidelines and not worry about it otherwise. Thank you that's very helpful.

Btw I had visited your website the other day and it looks very nice. You seem to also be using the Framework theme and have a beautiful result.
