out of memory failure on upgrading 5.3.2 to 5.3.3.1

when i go to the upgrade page and click the "Upgrade>" button I receive the following response after about 20 seconds:

Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 30408704) (tried to allocate 8192 bytes) in /homepages/19/d274502062/htdocs/pack243-net/concrete/libraries/cache/default.php on line 80

The site is still working, but is in some sort of limbo between versions. Any page with a gallery no longer loads at all (errors out), and there are some other odd things going on.

As luck would have it, this is the ONE time I got lazy and didn't bother to backup the database prior to upgrading.

based on what little i could find i uninstalled the blog and gallery add on blocks to see if they were interfering... this did not help at all.

I could not find a reference to this problem anywhere, so please forgive me if this is a repeated subject.

would i benefit from installing the 3.2 files over the concrete5 directory? since my database *seems* ok, might i benefit by starting with a fresh install of the files and somehow hooking this up to the existing database?

any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

thanks-

Increase the memory limit found in your php.ini file. make it double or something.
See:http://www.wallpaperama.com/forums/how-to-change-memory-limit-php-a...

im on a shared host, so no access to the php.ini file. i tried adjusting the setting in the .htaccess files, however this seems to only cause the entire site to error 500 out.

can you suggest a *correct* way to update the memory limit via .htaccess?

thanks!

As per the help file from my webhost (1and1):
"Due to resource limits on our Shared Hosting machines, it is not possible to allocate more than 20M of memory to PHP, although phpinfo() may report a higher number. You will be unable to increase the memory usage limit with a php.ini file."
Also, phpinfo reports 40mb available to php, although the hosting info above implies I'll only get 20.
Any other ideas?
help please!!!! thanks-

well.. change host or move everything to your computer and run it there.
I could offer you hosting but it would not be nice. Check out hosting with concrete5, they are going to be very helpful if you go with them. Now if you are going to move everything to your pc, install wamp and edit config/site.php change the host and dir Rel as it is on your local pc.

the idea being: move everything to my local host, upgrade the site, then move it back?

interesting idea.... if a little brutal...
changing host is not an option if this is the only issue.

I'm on hold with tech support. If they cannot solve it I might just try the local copy approach. I sure hope that it is only the upgrade I need to get through and that I dont continue to have additional problems.

thanks!

just got off the phone with tech support... they cranked the php memory up past 40mb (tho they did not say how high) and got thru three more out of memory messages before deciding they could not tune the number any higher without possibly bothering other customers.

moral of the story is that I am going to have to try the local copy upgrade method...

there MUST be a better way... but right now I see no other.

thanks for the suggestion-

it's been a sheer nightmare, and i now know far more about WAMP stacks, and dealing with moving C5 sites to and from windows/linux, configuring php memory limits, and many other nuts and bolts tasks than i expected.
however the good news is that I'm on 5.3.3.1 now, and everything seems to be working properly. I did have to some additional research thru the forums to get past other errors on my local machine, most notably adding some lines to the version_532.php file, and manually adding a column to one of the tables. I've lost track of the relevant pages otherwise I'd link them here.
I'm still going to be doing all of my sites in C5, however I sure hope that I dont have any more future upgrades as difficult as this one was.
[please note I run 4 public C5 based sites, and 3/4 upgraded with no problems]
thanks again for your help!
