Overriding a blocks controller class

Hello all,
I haven't been able to find a clear answer to this questions but, can I or can't I override a blocks controller.php file by creating a new one in my custom template directory? Or do I have to edit the controller class itself? (Which I know isn't good to do because it will be overridden when the package is updated)
