Page Types / Single Pages / Templates

Hi everyone,
I'm a little confused. I have a site under construction atm, and all pages but one use the same page layout. The one that is different isnt very different at all, other than it has 2 columns instead of 3.
I have my default.php and i created a view.php as I read on the concrete forums. I edited a copy of my default.php and removed the section of code for the column I didnt want to be displayed and added this as a new page type. This looks exactly like it should and I thought it had worked, but there are no editable sections on that page anymore. Am I going about this all wrong or am I missing something?!

I have manged to get editable regions to appear where I would like them on this new page type, however I seem to have an extra block which I haven't added in, and I dont know how to get rid of it. It seems to be stopping my main panel from floating left and expanding to the edge of the page. Any ideas?! screen shot attached.
