page paths and location

Hi, I can't believe this hasn't been asked before but my search proved fruitless. On my page properties, on the page paths and location tab, the "canonical URL" ishttp://www.stainedonline.com/us (apparently). But when I navigate to that I get a 404 error (unformatted). Hmmm? I also don't get why it listed just the name of that page without any kind of extension, as if it were some type of folder in the site directory?
I can get to the page if I go to /index.php/us. Why the difference?
Really, I my goal is to be able to navigate around my site using traditional looking URLs. I remember somebody on here had accomplished that without Pretty URLs. Is there someplace I can read the details of that?
Once again, thank you so much for reading.

Thanks Frz! I took the code (line returns and all) out of the dashboard, threw it in a plain text file, named it .htaccess, and put it in the same directory that has my concrete5 installation. I have a shared web host. Does all that add up so far? It's not working though, I must have left something out..
some hosts don't allow htaccess and/or only allows limited functionality of the htaccess
Now pretty URLs may be working, but not as intended. When I go tohttp://www.stainedonline.com/us it brings up index.php not the "us" page. Something within c5?
regarding extensions, that's pretty common in middleware these days.
