Pagination as list items for package pages

I'm creating a package which uses a few dashboard single pages.
I've added the pagination through the DatabaseItemList object but the pagination is displayed using spans.
I followed this:http://www.concrete5.org/documentation/how-tos/developers/styling-t... to change to list items but how can I get this to apply to my dashboard pages?
