PHP.ini Crashing website

I have had my php.ini file in place for about 4 years and had any problems. Today I go to log into my site to upload a file, and I get an 500 internal server error. I've changed nothing for lately. I was able to get into my site files and changed the name of my php.ini file and the site came back. What could my php.ini doing to cause the site to crash? I'm using 5.6.3.3 and hosting on iPage.com

The only thing I can think of, is that the website is running a different version of PHP than is set up on the PHP.ini file.
I've changed the php.ini file and nothing changed. I think you are right about the php changing. I'll have to look more into that. Thanks for your help
