Pretty URLs using GoDaddy

So I built my site and then realized that I didn't have pretty URLs enabled. When I turn it on, it updates all the links on the site, but when I click on them the page isn't found and is still located at /index.php/whatever

I tried looking up some solutions but people were talking about a php5.ini file, mod-rewrites, and htaccess. I know what none of those things are, where they go, or what they do. Can someone explain to me exactly what I need to do to have pretty URLs without breaking all the links on my site? My domain and hosting is through GoDaddy. Please help as I'm trying to optimize my site for SEO and these URLs are ugly. Thanks in advance!

as the instructions say when you turn pretty urls on, you need to copy the code supplied to the .htaccess file at the root of your site.

if there is no such file, just create one and paste the code in there and it's done!

Thanks for the response! What should the name of the file be because the extension is .htaccess, right?

no name, just the extension. so just name it .htaccess. you won't be able to do create a file in windows without a name so if you're on windows just name it hello.htaccess and then rename it directly from the ftp client once uploaded.

Concrete5 says that it successfully updated the .htaccess though and the links are still broken

did you check the .htaccess file to verify? the problem you're having is exactly what happens when the htaccess file isn't updated.

GoDaddy is a special kind of cat. I hate to say this but I have given up on them and refuse to work on any site hosted on GoDaddy. Apparently they have upgraded some of their Apache server software to a newer version and it's causing headaches for the Pretty URL stuff.

If you are not willing to switch hosts then you can read all these posts and try lots of stuff. I have no way of knowing what will work on your specific server and you will burn a week trying to fix it.

Yikes.... Thanks for the help. If I find a solution that works for me, I'll report back.

I have used Godaddy hosting in the past and what can I say is that because shared hosting can be very cheap, it has a lot of disadvantages!

Not all shared hosting is the same. I have accounts at Siteground and Arvixe that are as cheap but work flawlessly (almost all the time).

Compare that to GoDaddy:

Read the first review and you'll know what I have also experienced with them. Weeks of work and still no resolution. Have you ever noticed that NONE of there TV ads mention anything about how good there servers are?
