Problems seeing images in File manager in new installation of 5.6.2

I have a newly installed version of 5.6.2 and the images don't appear in the file manager - although it is clear that they loaded - and they don't appear on the website when I try to load them there. Other places I have seen that you need to change the settings of the MySQL using SET @ @global.sql_mode = ” but the provider I am using doesn't allow me to do that. Can I make a change to PHP.ini that makes it work or do I have to ask the provider. And if so, then I need to know what to ask them but I don't understand why this should be a problem. Can someone explain this to me? Just for the sake of argument, I loaded up an earlier version with the same result - images don't show. What PHP or MySQL command has to be activated for Concrete to work?
Thanks in advance.
Running MySQL5, PHP5

I have looked to see if the MySQL is running in strict but there is no command listed. Please, I really need help with this. Has anyone else had this problem that they can tell me what to do? Why don't these bloody servers have consistent conditions that something simple like Concrete5 can run on them?!!!
