Problems with 5.5 update

I just installed the new 5.5 update and it said, "unable to connect to database" or something along those lines. Now when I login to my site I am unable to edit it or access the dashboard. I can login, but then there is no Edit Bar.

How can I successfully update to 5.5?

As for the Edit/Dashboard functionality, you need to have the following code just before your closing /body tag in your template:
<?php Loader::element('footer_required'); ?>


That piece of code loads the c5 js.
