Quick way to change area names

I have created area names that don't follow the guidelines and it is breaking a few add ons.
When i change my default.php the layouts break as the blocks I've set up are obviously related to areas.
Is there a quick way to change the area names, even in the DB and anything I should be aware of?

Area names can be changed in the template, You don't need to change area names in the db.
I know I can change them in my templates but when I do that all my blocks disappear.
Hi gunkdesign, I have found the Cobble add-on (free) to be very helpful for finding all blocks that have disappeared (the blocks that are assigned to area's that are no longer present in the template).

Once you find the orphaned blocks you'll need to add the area/s that contain them back to your templates and manually move them into the new areas.
I have yet to find a "quick" way to do this.
