Registration Passphrase

We are looking to add a "passphrase" to our registration process.
For Example: We would like to be able to have a passphrase that we handout when talking to people. If the user goes to register they can enter the passphrase and get registered.
If however the person doesn't have a passphrase it will put them into the "Needs Activation" group for our staff to activate them.
Any ideas on the best way to accomplish this?

I have an addon waiting in the marketplace queue that allows users to invite new users with a passphrase. It should be released soon (probably next week). If you want it before then contact me a jack.lightbody@gmail.com. The addon is going to be $20, btw
