Running C5 in Vagrant VM

I am running Concrete5.7.0.1 in a Vagrant Virtual Machine provisioned with protobox (getprotobox.com). It is unbearingly slow. Page load takes a few seconds, loading the content of the various menus on the editing bar also. Concrete5.6 runs reasonably fast if the machine has 2gb+ memory. I was wondering if someone could share their setup with me, so that I can see how to improve mine. Any other tips are also appreciated.

Possible causes:
The VM is 32bit since my computer doesn't support 64bit Virtualization.
I use the virtualbox method to sync files across host and VM since I had trouble setting it up with nfs.
The machine has 3gb ram assigned to it ( which is enough I suppose).

Did you ever manage to figure this out .. I too find it unbearingly slow in both vagrant and a MAMP.. the only way I've ever been able to get it sped up is by running nginx
Still no idea what causes this. Switched to good ol' XAMPP for C5 development.
This is a bit disheartening, as I've just started trying to build my first site in Concrete5, and elected to use a Vagrant VM for this, as well (using the Concrete5 team's own Vagrant setup), and am also finding it unbearably slow. I was hoping this could be my standard dev SOE moving forward.
If anyone else finds a magic bullet please let us know.
The VM doesn't seem to be lacking in memory, and the database itself seems to run well enough when running direct queries against it.
