Search and search path question

c5 search newbie here.
The search_paths variable (ie "Search under this page") should restrict the results to pages under that path, right?
Even though I set a path of "/path" I'm getting results from all over the site (eg "/notthepath/page", not just in "/path" (eg "/path/page").
Can anyone shed light on this issue?
