Search block problems

I have set up my website and I tried the search box (built-in) but it does not find any of the words I know are in my content blocks around the website. The only page it seems to search in is the homepage. The whole site is password protected.
Any ideas how I can get it to search content from the whole website?

Go to system & settings>search index, choose whitelist and tick the boxes of the areas you want to include in your search.
Next go to system&settings>Automated Jobs and run the search index jobs..

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately no luck. It did seem to index 224 pages or so but when searching a word I know appears in my pages, no results come up..
