search external database

Hi, I have a database integrated into my Concrete5 site and I want to be able to search for keywords or products within it.

Is it possible to point the 'search block' to look through the relevant columns in the external database?

yeah, I knew that would be the case. I have experience with SQL and php, but it's the integration with the 'search block' that I need to know more about...

Are there any examples of this that I could look at to get an idea as to how to adapt the block to look at an external db?
