SEO and Concrete5

I would like it if any advanced website owners would help me out with SEO since I have only a basic knowledge on the matter at the moment, what tips and tricks to you'll recommend people?
Would appreciate any help a lot because my website has pretty much crashed and burned (my first) since I couldn't get enough signups and the design was off-putting ( changes are underway).
What I know so far is that meta-tags are a must to basically tag your website for google and other search engines.
Also, how does C5 do with SEO? Any tips on this context?

Hello Moriarty
Thanks! That was pretty helpful! Though I didn't understand what you say in the 3 paragraph about emphasizing on CMS as only the content area... what do you mean?
What are spammy backlinks? So far I have links in reputable web admin forums. What are link farms?
Thanks for the help !

Hi JD
A CMS means that your content is saved in another place on your website's servers. A modern search engine looks only at these pieces of information - in the old days (pre-Panda) the search engine would take more notice of the content in the header zone.
Because my website is v. old at the moment, at least in style. That means the search engine is now looking at my site with all the header code as being part of the content ... at least that is my feeling as to what is going on.
Spammy Backlinks - these are backlinks that have been bought and sit on a website that has one intention: providing backlinks. If all your backlinks are properly authored by you or your friends then you are in the clear. Any that have been bought from firms should be regarded as being of dubious quality.
A link farm is a page on your site which links to other sites - and only serves this function. This does not cover appropriate links that are in the context of your content or links added by people commenting. These are entirely legitimate - the keyword is they are grown not forced.
Hope this helps! M xx

Hi
Have you registered your site with Google and had it verified?
If not go towww.www.google.com/webmasters/tools/... and sign up, follow the steps to verify your site, normally a verification code in a file or in your code.
Have you run your site map job in C5 dashboard at System and Settings/ Automated Jobs. If never or not recently then give it ago and get it up to date.
Once you have done that go back to your Google account and add a site map to that account, the file will be called sitemap.xml
Once you have done those two things go to the go to the Health tab in your Google account and do a Fetch as Google and make sure it is going to fetch your whole site not just the Home page.
That's the steps for Google but don't forget the other search engines like Bing and Yahoo etc which will all have similar methods as Google for a full indexing of your site.
Give a lot of thought to both your page tile and description as this text will show in the search listings.
Try and think what people are going to be typing in to an engine to find your type of product/service and if possible include those words or phrases in your titles, descriptions and body text.
The list of things could go on for a long time but hopefully that has given you a good place to start.
Hope it helps

Hello Madeforspace
1.I glad you brought up web master tools, I just can't get the verification done! The file upload doesn't work because after uploading it it's doesn't use the url google expects :( And I don't have full control of my server yet- I run it through a family member.
Anyway C5 I can't find anything called meta tags - I insert the code in the tracking codes and choose head of document AND I insert it in meta keywords ! What more can I do?
2.What are the links to Bings, yahoos equivalents of webmaster tools, please share here.
3. It turns out those automated jobs were never done! :O How do I get them done?
As you might gather I'm more of an entrepreneur so excuse my inability to not understand the technicalities and ask for elaborations.
All in all that was a really helpful post, thank you!

I hope C5 won't be offended if I respond to his useful advice, which tackled a completely different aspect than I did.
Why doesn't Google use the URL it expects?? This sounds fishy! Do please explain.
Meta Tags - are things like description, keywords and so-on and are found in the <head> section. Sometimes these are automated so that you don't have to fiddle around with the code yourself. It seems you are happy with this.
Links to Bing webmaster tools - which now includes Yahoo! as they have merged their algorithms:

since the Panda/Penguin algorithm changes, SEO has undergone a major overhaul.
Google has always stated that their aim is content first and foremost.
Panda was essentially the revision that saw SEO emphasizing websites based on CMS systems as only the content area would be searched by their bots. The title and url are still included as well as other factors - primary is the content in your content block (or whatever you choose to call it).
Basic tips:
(1) One topic = one page. You must be extremely clear about how you describe the things you do, and the topics you write about. Keep your audience interested so that they stay around for 30 seconds per page minimum (enough time to read it)
(2) Not too many of your keyword(s) over the page. Keyword spamming is now out.
(3) Make sure that you describe the situation you want to present carefully in words that cannot be misinterpreted ("bear in mind" could mean a bear in mind ... the animal, that is. The bot doesn't see any difference between bears and bears). 600-750 words is a goodly amount for a page.
(4) Include an image with your keyword in the title and description
(5) Regular updating will encourage the search engines to return and this is seen as valid in SEO terms. Hence a better pagerank.
If you have any spammy backlinks to your site, remove those pages. Remove any link farms or links to crummy sites. Good quality links from good quality sources are worthwhile as long as someone (which can include you) follows them.
