split layout deletes content

Hello,
I was hoping you could help me. I am finding when i create a layout and try to edit the field sizes once i try to either preview the changes or publish them. The content for the whole page vanishes! I'm not to sure how to fix this and i am not getting any errors in the console log or anything.
