Standard cache slows responses down to 2000-3000ms

I have several production web sites where enabling the standard cache reproducibly slows page requests down - they take 2-3 seconds to respond. Turning the standard cache off brings response times to a more bearable 500-900ms.
Is this a known behaviour that can be fixed somehow?

What do you mean by 'standard cache'? Block cache? Override cache? Full page cache? Or all of them?
Ah, the item is named "Standard cache" in the German translation but it's the Block cache.
Let me do an update of C5 first before giving this any further attention - I realized yesterday both sites are still running 5.6.0.2. That may already solve the issues.
