Superfish vertical menus have vertical separators between them

Hi, I have recently installed superfish and it appears to work well, except that when I use a vertical menu, instead of horizontal separators, I get vertical ones, which effectively then make my linespace double. I've attached a jpeg.

I've reinstalled the package in case I accidentally edited something and I have searched the css for clues. What am I doing wrong?
