superfish customization

I was wondering if anyone could help me edit the superfish so there was no background color on top level and the the top level width was determined automatically by the menu title rather than all being 120px wide for example?

by changing:

.sf-menu ul li {
   width:         100%;

to:

.sf-menu ul li {
   width:         auto;

the sub drop down menu fits the size of each page but i cant get it to do it on the top level?
