Theme Development with 5.7
Permalink
I'm working on a new theme for a client and decided to start the layout on 5.7 to get a feel for it. While the dotted lines around areas in older versions sometimes drove me crazy causing things to shift out of place, having no indication of areas until hovering on them makes it really difficult to work on the theme layout.
I think you need a wireframe mode, or have some shaded backgrounds on the areas so you can see them when looking at the page.
Having to scroll around to highlight areas is fine for managing a finished sight, but for development it is like working with your eyes closed. I see it as a huge problem when trying to tweak up a complicated layout.

Yeah, I did put a background color on the ccm-area class so You can see the layout of the divs (see attached).
The new button that appears on hover adds a lot of vertical space between page areas, I think that's going to mess up backgrounds a little more than the old edit layout did.
Personally I liked better the "add to area" text, I could see exactly where I was without having to hover. I think we are adding to much need to hover to locate page elements
I think this is all fine for editing, but for developing it is really lacking. I hope a little more thought is put into this.

use box shadow?
In the long run, if it doesn't come from the core, you could build a tinted background for areas when a page is in edit mode into your theme.
