$this->action yields page not found

When using $this->action('edit') in my package's dashboard single_page view to call a method called "edit" in my controller , I end up getting a "page not found" error. I know the controller is being run as it is loading database models required to render the view. I'm mystified! Has anyone else had this problem? I looked around the forums but couldn't find an answer.
