This is just a rant.

I like C5, but the new version 5.5.2 has just made my site useless. Addons that were stated to work with this version before I upgraded have not been working or have been crashing the site.

So while the Scrapbooks were brought back just for backward compatibility. The new version really isn't backwards compatible. This is a problem for me so I going to go back to using 5.4.2 because quite simply it just worked. So until all the Addons that I have a strong need for work with this version. I'm going to stay with what works.

If your add-ons are for sure the cause of your site crashing, and they are listed as 5.5 compatible than you may want to update those packages. A lot of the add-ons were tweaked for 5.5 compatibility, but you will need the tweaked version. Did you upgrade them ?

That is when my site started to run poorly. It started with Defunct Social Icons. I updated it and it was no longer working. So I tried the Reloaded version and that just made things worse for me.

An example of what I mean is that even when I tried to override the addons in the block directory nothing would happen. I tried to uninstall the addons that were causing problems for me but they wouldn't uninstall even when I cleared the cache.

My installation was a manual install and not a scripted one on my server. So I'm going to go with what works for now and reinstall 5.4.2 for now.

That doesn't mean I give up on 5.5.2. Just that I don't want to think too much at this time. I will set up a testing install of 5.5.2 and test everything there first. Customizations and all.

With everything C5 has brought business wise. I have no intention of going back to working on Joomla!

I would consider upgrading the add-ons first than upgrading the system second. Sucks that your having an issue, and I hear you loud, and clear on the Joomla sentiment.

Actually, that is what I did first on account that the CMS alerted that first and it took me a while to convince myself to do the upgrade.

I used to be a Joomla! wizard but when I discovered C5 I pretty much dropped Joomla! on the word GO. Joomla! I bought a book and watch lynda.com videos covering everything Joomla! It took one month to learn the CMS when I started there. C5 took one hour literally. After that the choice was clear.

Not only that, C5 let me run wild with ideas in design that I couldn't do with Joomla! Heck, I even tried WordPress, but as you can tell C5 still won out. Drupal... no comment.

Hello,
I'm a bit late here but I thought maybe I could help.
I developped the Social icons Reloaded add-on based on Defunct Social Icons add-on.
I've been using it with C5 5.5.x versions and had no problem. Several other users have reported being satisfied and it's used on at least one listed website. I'm 99.9% sure the add-on is 5.5.x compatible.

I think you should look into other possible issues such as installation issues.
Let me know if I can be of help.

Good luck
