Translation of site content via an API

I've had a client ask about usinghttp://www.translationplugin.com/... for translating site content. (Specifically the API)
Has anyone had any experience with something of this nature?
The intention is that when someone edits the english version of the site a new request is made to translate the relevant languages.
The current process involves exporting the site, translating the content and then re-importing the site but I'm now investigating options for more granular translation.
