Trying to figure out why a site is slow

I put together a site greaserag.org a bit ago that's kind of ported from wordpress. The theme was originally a wordpress theme and the content was imported from a wordpress XML file. The blogging platform is something custom that I ported from ProBlog called "User Blogs" where each user can publish blog posts from the front end and optionally include them with selected categories.

I'm getting some really long load times on the pages and I haven't been able to track it down as to where the slowdown is coming from. Is there anyone that can help me with benchmarking this to figure out where in the code it's slowing down? I'm getting initial page loads of 7-10 seconds but other sites on similar servers load up in 1.5 seconds or less. The time for all the assets takes longer than that but I think if I could get the initial page load to be faster then the whole thing would work better.

I tried using Miser but that actually seemed to slow things down even more, it didn't speed things up at all.

Any help would be appreciated, even just letting me know how you time code execution in concrete 5.

I'm in Calgary Canada, and only saw a small half second hiccup when visiting. Are you only seeing an issue with speed when your logged in? or is it the users blogging seeing speed issues ?

I went through 10 pages with only members giving a second of delay.

It is worse when you are logged in but we were seeing slowdowns when not logged in too. It looks like it's actually loading fast now though, it also seems to come and go, some days everything is so slow that you can't even share a link from the site to facebook because the timeout is too long.

Seems to load quite quickly here in NZ - 4 seconds or so including the DNS lookup - and it's early evening when the net usually slows down.

The IP of your server traces back to what looks like an ADSL/Cable connection - do you have a local congestion issue or other network problem, or maybe not enough upload capacity?
