Ugrade to 8.5.4 from 5.7.5.13 - loss of attribute values after upgrade

Has anyone come across an issue with attribute values being lost and being removed from attribute sets post upgrade to 8.5.4? It's not all attributes and the types are all standard C5 attribute types (select, text, checkbox, datetime). We have 85 page attributes and from 72 onwards the values are gone and they are no longer linked to an attribute set. The actual attributes are still there in the attributekeys tables it's just the actual values and sets?
We actually managed to resolve this ourselves. It seems there was a permissions/ownership issue on the update concrete folder. I'm not sure exactly how this affected some attributes going missing but changing the owner to www-data allowed the upgrade with no attribute data loss.
