I'm having the same problem with the coreCommerce package.
I found the answer in another thread. Something along the lines of needing to delete all the files within the trash folder through ftp, and also checking the permissions of the folder.
If i come across the thread ill send you a link

I am having this same problem and am unable to resolve it. Everytime I try and upgrade a package I get I am on 5.3.3.1 - any pointers? I've changed permissions of the /trash folder, changed owners, deleted and added, nothing seems to help.
Unable to backup old package directory to /var/www/vhosts/...
Did anyone solve this problem?
