Update not performing

I tried to update a site from 5.3.2 to 5.4.0.5 but then noting happened. The page only says it's loading.
So i uploaded the 5.3.3.1 version and then i got a database error.(mysql error 1075). After sorting this out the site was still at version 5.3.2.
I uploaded the 5.4.0.5 version again and the page hangs. Also i can´t reach the `sitemap` page anymore. It says it doesn't exist.
I did not make a copy of the database so i'm getting a little worried now..
Suggestion anyone?

It doesn't sound like the update from 5.3.2 to 5.3.3.1 is working properly. I would focus on that one first. What is the error that's happening when you first update from 5.3.2 to 5.3.3.1?

Thx for the reply.
The problem was that the server had too much serverload. It appears that when the update process takes too long the page just hangs and doesn't repond anymore. After we disabled a few sites on the server the update went just fine.
