upgrading from 5.5.2 to 5.6.1 with ecommerce

I have a site with custom content that I'd like to upgrade from 5.5.2 to 5.6.1 when it comes out.

Here are my environment settings

# concrete5 Version
5.5.2.1
# concrete5 Packages
Aviary Image Editor (1.0.3), Designer Content (3.1), eCommerce (2.8.3), Forms With PayPal Payment (1.3.2), Manual Nav (1.2), Mobile Theme Switcher (1.1), Pro Blog (6.5.1).

I've been seeing some posts about eCommerce breaking with the upgrade so I have some questions:

1. Is upgrading a bad idea? I'd really like to get some of the performance enhancements from 5.5 to 5.6...
2. If I do the upgrade and it doesn't work, can I just roll back to my old "concrete" folder?
3. Anything else I should watch out for??

You'll need to update your addons. You should (very strongly advised) backup your entire site and db before upgrading. Better yet: clone your site to a subfolder and upgrade that. When (if) that is working just fine, move it to your live server.

Ooooh. Can you explain this clone process a bit more?

Do I just take my current site and copy all the files to another folder, and do the upgrade there?

buy the cheap Backup Voodoo in the marketplace for $35. It will handle the process for you to a great extent. If you want to have it done in a more carefree manner PM me. Do you have cpanel on your hosting?

Just to expand on @tallacman's post. Cloning a site prior to an upgrade is one of the use-cases Backup Voodoo was designed to help with and the main reason why it was engineered to work with old versions of c5 as far back as c5.4.1.1.
