Use of addons I've enhanced
Permalink
I wanted to check the "deal" with using addons I've bought for a project but then enhanced to meet my need.
Can I use my enhanced version as my own work (not to sell as an addon myself) or do I need to buy the addon everytime I use my own codeline? I'm not talking a tiny tweek to some display text, I'm talking a decent enhancement. I'm fine offering my revised code to the community or the addon dev for free.
Thanks.

I think the "right" thing to do is to honor the model and pay each time you use the add-on code. If you were using the stock add-on with no enhancements, you'd pay each time, right? Your enhanced block wouldn't exist without the original developer's efforts.
Good idea to offer your enhancement to the developer. Maybe they'll grant you some free licenses or bad karma immunity :-)

As someone that has 2 addons, 5 under Product Review Process, and a bunch others in the pipeline(a really good one almost ready), I would have no problem granting additional licenses for something that greatly enhanced the addon itself.
A lot of changes made to addons are view templates and things like that, which while nice aren't something that can be rolled back into the code, and stuff rolled back into the code has to be clearly commented and provide a practical feature enhancement without breaking something else :)

All points taken. To be clear I'm not trying to get something for nothing here:-)
ScottC, yeah this isn't a custom view template, it's an additional option in the block that provides something significant in the shape of the data returned from the controller. It's all very tested;-)

Well if you do anything like that for any of my addons and it greatly improved the addon I think i'd have to be an idiot to not give you additional licenses in return for a huge feature enhancement.
I'd never consider you or anyone else an idiot for something like that but I take yr point;-)
Maybe you can work out a deal where your work and theirs can be combined to be sold and share the profit some way.
Another option is that you give them the code, they keep selling it with that code added and you get unlimited free licences for personal use.
It all depends on what you can work out with them but I don't think it's correct to keep using a modified version of a paid item.
