Use /username as profile page

I'm in the process of creating a very user-driven site where user profiles will be pretty much the main part of the site, and I would love to be able to load profile pages ashttp://www.site.com/username rather thanhttp://www.site.com/profile/10. Does anyone know what might be an easy way to accomplish this? Maybe through some sort of .htaccess rewrite?

My friend request function is not working at all. 'Member Search' window in Profile doesn't give any results at all.
