What exactly does Exclude From Search Index do?

In Page Properties > Custom Attributes > Navigation and Indexing, what exactly does "Exclude From Search Index" option do? Is it for disallowing search engine robots to disallow indexing the page?

Do I also have to tick "Exclude From sitemap.xml" when this option is selected?

enlil
exclude from search index removes it from being indexed by the core search functionality. Excluding from sitemap will disallow robots like google from indexing it.
