What's Your Order of Operations?

What I mean by this is, what's your process like when you start building out a new C5 site?

I'm trying to hammer down the best order to do things in and I'm curious what others do. For the most part, this is how I do things:

1.) Install C5
2.) Slice up PSD
3.) Code up the HTML and CSS to build a shell
4.) Go through C5 and make all my regular settings changes (setting up user groups, turning on advances permissions if needed, install add-ons, etc)

After that, I get to a point where I'm not sure what the next best thing to do is. I like to style my navigation, but that means I have to add all the pages to the sitemap. But I also like to go through and define Page Defaults...but with no content yet, it's hard to define those.

I usually find myself going back and forth between styling content, adding pages and setting up pages defaults (and publishing to child pages).

Is this pretty typical for the rest of you? I'm curious what your processes are like.

For me, its

1)Install C5
2)Slice up PNG (no PSD's for me horrible things)
2a) Build section of page in CSS and HTML, normally nav first
2b) Home Page
2c) Footer
3) Slice up default page
4) Build default page
5) Rinse Repeat for the rest of the pages,
6) I like to add content, where I can as I go even if its just Latin
7)(optional)Advanced permissions (used less now days) I tend to give more training on C5.

But your process seems similar to mine. I dont like to add pages in until I have content, but I often end up adding a blank page and then re-adding content via Page Types.

For me its always a question as to whether to use lots of Page Types, or use Attributes to display certain content? Thats one I am not certain about yet but hopefully with the introduction of global areas will help that?

Hmm, good question.

- Install C5 on dev server with my skeleton theme
- Roughly build out home page template and maybe 1-2 other general ones based on wireframes and/or comps
- Same for header and footer elements
- Pad sitemap with dummy pages (thanks Add Multiple Pages addon!)
- Flesh out navigation
- Buy/download/write any custom blocks and test their functionality
- Fill a few pages with various dummy text to rough out overall typography styles
- Start setting default content for templates
- Replace dummy pages with a few actual content pages
- Slice up PSD for any graphics, put in CSS styles
- Pixel perfect where I can to hammer down typography
- Finalize navigation functionality + styling
- Cross-browser/platform testing on navigation + any custom blocks
- Build out rest of site
- Implement any changes to UI then finalize styling
- Build home page
- Plug up any system pages I won't need; style the ones I will
- General QA (see if I break the site)
- Submit for client review then implement any sane changes
- Create final users/groups + set any permissions
- Final QA
- Training session with client
- Finalize any server migration duties
- Launch
