Why is a header so difficult?

Why is is SO difficult to simply add a header image? I'd like to put a logo in the area where the site title is. How is there not a very simple way to do this?
Also, why don't edits show up. Multiple times I've tried changing the colors under customization for themes and the changes never show up. I've tried it with multiple themes. Sometimes they show up, sometimes they don't. I've tried editing the design of blocks. Again, sometimes it shows up, sometimes not.
I'm wondering if I'm in over my head and should give up. I'd like to be able to customize a theme without having to mess with css too much. I know very little css. I'm not a programmer, so maybe this just isn't for me.
Any advice?

Adding a logo where the header is - Depending on the theme, it might be as easy as going to the global scrapbook and adding a logo instead of words. The color might not change because of how the theme could be set up. The complex themes might not be for you because of images might be used instead of actual color. All of this would be found in the theme, but with no examples of what you are using, not sure how much more I can help you.
